Academy boys deliver at local blitz

7 teams travelling between Monaghan and Strabane converged at Omagh Rugby club to take part in the first schools blitz of the season.

The Strabane Academy boys managed to progress through the round robin competition, not only winning every game, but also without conceding a try!

With a healthy squad of 25 players the Strabane side were well equipped to deal with the gruelling format.

In game one V Fivemiletown HS, initial sustained pressure lead to man of the match Finn Hampton demonstrate some quick thinking, pouncing on a loose ball to score under the posts.  In a cracking game, both side showed excellent defensive qualities.

The second game saw Strabane make 5 changes with little negative impact, tries from Captain Reuben Orr, and centres Henderson and Harper saw Strabane to a comfortable win against Erne Integrated.

A similar pattern followed in the next few games as Strabane dominated possession and territory against enthusiastic opposition from Castlederg High School and a very physical Monaghan side. There were more tries for marauding number 8 Orr, as well as scores for prop Preston and out half McDonald, who marshalled his troops with confidence.

However, Strabane reserved the score of the tournament for the final game, against Omagh High school.  After countless phases of sustained forward pressure deep inside the Omagh ‘22’, the ball was moved out to the backs.  Who in turn fizzed the ball wide to a flying Jacob Wood who finished with finesse on the right wing.

The competition was played in the true spirit of sport, with excellent skills and endeavour on display, and proper etiquette observed at the final whistle.

Thanks must go to tournament organiser Mr Steven Clarke, Head of PE Fivemiletown High School, described the blitz as a great success and a thoroughly enjoyable experience for all involved.
